I have just launched a new section at www.melissamercier.com called “Exposure”.
Using recycled materials and mostly trash, I have started changing the look of Vancouver by converting these materials into canvases and public art installations.

I find it’s a unique way to express myself, advertise my work, and leave an environmental statement all in one creative package.

Call to Artists

“Exposure” is a multi-artist campaign designed to expose the work of artists around the world through the traffic of my site. Artists installations will be featured regularly.
To submit your melissamercier.com installation follow the link to the guidelines for “Exposure”.

I’m looking forward to seeing your work and bringing our creative explorations closer together.

Every year we take time to put our collective heads together, so we decided to embrace the Westcoast once again and headed up to Rock Water Secret Cove in Sechelt, BC. The team was split between camping and hotel accommodations so we went “Glamping”. It’s the outdoor tent experience with some high-end comforts (think glamorous camping). Sightings of black bear, eagles, sea otters and the odd whale certainly did help with our intense “tete a tete” meetings and pajama parties. Good times were had by all!

Fractals are images created with specialized mathematical formulas and feature self-similar shapes that repeat at different scales throughout the image. One of the ways to explore fractals is to choose a small area and “zoom” into it. This zooming can be done infinitely, without ever running out of structure.

To really appreciate this phenomenon, I have utilized a Google-map-type tool that allows viewers to zoom into and explore a few of my works. The first image is a deep zoom into the Mandelbrot set’s “Seahorse Valley”:

Vielle. Copyright © Janet Parke.

If the original Mandelbrot fractal from which Vielle came was printed the size of a 10″ x 17″ print, this particular section would be smaller than a hydrogen atom. Conversely, if the entire structure was magnified and printed at the same resolution as that print, it would be wider than four times the distance to the Moon and back. The self-similar repetition of spiral shapes is easy to see here, both in the foreground and in the lacy background shapes. See the zoomable image here.

Unlike photography, which can only be enlarged a certain amount before resolution is compromised and details become grainy or fuzzy, fractals are generated mathematically and can be enlarged to any size without losing details. In fact, the larger the render or print, the more clearly the details of the fractal structure can be seen.

Florishen is another very detailed fractal image, with a modern, pop art feel:

Florishen. Copyright © Janet Parke.

Fractal art is ideal for large installations because the work is stunning when viewed from a distance but also invites inches-away inspection. Explore Florishen’s incredible detail here.

In Birdejo, it’s the small details of the textures that are best viewed in a high-resolution render:

Birdejo. Copyright © Janet Parke

This image uses a fractal formula based on “Perlin Noise,” for which Ken Perlin received an Academy Award for Technical Achievement in 1997. The award reads “The development of Perlin Noise has allowed computer graphics artists to better represent the complexity of natural phenomena in visual effects for the motion picture industry.” Explore a high-resolution version of Birdejo here.

Many of my works are available through Farmboy Fine Arts. And you can see my complete online portfolio here.

One of the mediums of art that everyone loves from Farmboy is ADA (acrylic digital art). It gets a lot of ohhhh’s and ahhhh’s from designers and their clients when they see it installed in lobbies, guestrooms and spa areas. We were pioneers in this type of artwork and continue to evolve the process to ensure maximum satisfaction from our clients. ADA is a sophisticated way to add colour, design and warmth to a space.
Episode : JOLLY RANCHER

DJ Wyatt Agard sends us another eclectic electric music mix, and your host Fatima interviews this month’s Podcast, famed Farmboy Fine Artist, photographer…

 Melissa Gidney,

“Over the years, I kept coming back to photography. It grounded me, it centered me, it continually helped me see and appreciate the things we often overlook. I have become an observer: one of nature, of emotion, of movements, of lines, of life. As I go about my days, in my own backyard or on the other side of the world, I am filled with complete awe and appreciation for what surrounds me. Everyday,I feel blessed to be doing what I love.

I’m almost 30 and yet feel life is just beginning. I am thankful of where I came from and excited for where I am going. I love my job, travel and spontaneity. Laughter is one of my favourite sounds. There is nothing like the smell of black coffee and good legs on a glass of wine. Where the mountains meet the ocean will always be home to me.

I like to photograph that which gets overlooked, or the everyday in such a way it warrants appreciation again. I like to open eyes, to inspire, just as my viewfinder does for me.”
