“It would be fair (nay, absurdly obvious) to say that Africa has had a pretty tough rap over the years, and when it comes to their cultural standing, it tends – generally – not to garner the global attention it deserves.

It comes as little surprise then, to learn that the ultimate continental cultural centre – Paris – is this month set to open one of the most forward-thinking exhibitions of African art in recent years, the African Living Room in the Marais.

Situated opposite the Picasso Museum in the comparatively minor Jean Marc Patras Gallery , the intimidating artistic institute does little to overawe the Patras’s latest project.

The living room is, as its title suggests, little more than an art-filled lounge, showcasing some of the best new offerings from contemporary African artists and designers.

Visitors are free to visit the space and stay all day should they feel so inclined – the owners have even provided a well-stocked fridge along with an array of reading material and a few culinary delights to keep loungers satisfied.

With vivid painting from Congolese artists Moké, Chéri Samba and Botalata; photography from John Kiyaya and Daniel Lainé; and banana-bright Furniture from Balthazar Faye , this refreshingly laissez-faire show brings some of the best of Sub-Saharan creativity to the discerning streets of Paris.”

The exhibition blogpix at Denise Bibro Fine Art’s Platform Project Space brings together four art bloggers who have each chosen an artist (or artists) for the show. The bloggers are Roberta Fallon & Libby Rosof, Joanne Mattera, and Hrag Vartanian.

Fallon & Rosof have chosen Philadelphia artist Christopher Davison; Joanne Mattera has selected three fellow bloggers (Sharon Butler, Steven Alexander, Julie Karabenick) and Reese Inman; and Hrag Vartanian recommends Brooklyn artist Ben La Rocco.

There’s a panel discussion at the gallery today (Saturday, March 7, 2009 at 5:00 pm). There’s also the opportunity to join the discussion online via the blogpix Twitter account, www.twitter.com/blogpix.

One&Only Lost Luggage was first launched in July 2008, and was the first stage in Malik’s luxury travel retail business. The idea is to provide exclusive pre-selected luggage with clothing essentials for a week’s holiday. Suitable for those who wish to travel light, or those with the misfortune to loose their luggage en route.

Acne’s cabin bags have been hand-picked to complement the climate and exotic style of each of One&Only’s resorts, from Mauritius to Dubai, with Cape Town due to open in April 2009. Lost Luggage items are to include lightweight chinos and tops, dresses and accessories, designed to be equipped for both day and evening. Bespoke bags can be created upon request, with any other items requested by the client.
